Trump ordered multiple agencies to rebuild the penitentiary, which was closed in
1963 over high operating costs and has been a tourist spot for decades.

President Donald Trump said Sunday that he has ordered several agencies to
rebuild and reopen Alcatraz, an infamous federal penitentiary that closed in the
1960s and has since become a popular tourist destination.

In a post on social media, Trump said he directed the Federal Bureau of Prisons,
the Department of Homeland Security, the Justice Department and others to work
together to open a “substantially enlarged and rebuilt” Alcatraz that would
house the country’s “most ruthless and violent” offenders.

A spokesperson for the Bureau of Prisons said the agency would comply with all
presidential orders. The Justice Department and DHS did not immediately respond
to requests for comment.

Speaking to reporters Sunday, Trump called the potential reopening “just an idea
I’ve had,” and he repeated his previous criticism of judges he said were seeking
trials for “every single person that’s in our country illegally.”

Details on the administration’s potential plans for Alcatraz remain unclear.
Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-California), the former House speaker, dismissed the
proposal Sunday as “not a serious one.”

Trump is such a stupid fuckwit. He really does live in the past. His dream for
America is to return to the era of factory smokestacks belching thick black
smoke and bending metal inside. But he's a fuckwit. That's not where the value is.

Alcatraz will not reopen as a prison. It didn't close in 1963 because it was too
antiquated — it closed because it was too fucking expensive to operate. A new
one will be even more expensive to operate, and the construction cost will be
astronomical.
