Suggestions for good but cheap stereo?

My wife and I are thinking of using some of our tax refund to buy a new
stereo. I don't want to spend more than $150 max. There are a couple of
"oldies" stations which play 1950's and 1960's music, which we can just
barely get in the car, but not on our cheap stereo. (no digital tuner, and
no external antenna hookup) One of these stations is AM, and one is FM.
I would like to be able to hook up an external FM and AM antenna, to see
if we can pull in these stations better.

Do any of you have suggestions? I have not purchased a stereo since
1995, and then it was just a cheapie.

						Thanks,

Do a reality check before you buy anything. Car radios are usually
pretty good. If your car radio is just barely receiving the stations,
whatever else you buy will not do much better, except for the external
antenna. If your car has an external antenna, attach a long wire to
it to get an idea of how much you can improve the reception. Or
alternatively, drive to a nearby hill and check for better reception.
If you can't improve it, then you might as well forget about picking
up those oldie stations. Another trick is to switch off the stereo
button. That will improve the signal to noise by nearly a factor of 10.

A digital tuner is great for setting the frequency, but it doesn't
mean it will receive weak stations any better than your cheap radio.
The qualities of a good receiver are low noise, good filtering,
and immunity to signal overload.

Check out pawn shops, and look for Boze Wave systems. Excellent quality,
superior sound, and I've bought two for $100 and under.

You don't have to have a huge system to get good sound.

The smaller mid-size / mini-systems by Aiwa, etc. have quite impressive
sound. They're much more than just 'boom boxes for a shelf'.

I think my $20 Altec Lansing speakers sound wonderful hooked to our PC. I
have most of my CD collection converted to Windows Media Files on our PC
and just pick one and put it on shuffle play. Jazz, classical, rock all
sound good. There's an EQ for adjustments. I've listened to Ozzy Osbourne
cranked up REAL loud and the speakers still haven't popped.

Most people who sell stuff to pawn shops are probably merely desperate for
money, not unhappy with their stuff. Most pawn shops only take nice,
quality stuff -- like stereos, musical instruments, tools, jewelry, etc..
No Foreman Grilles or toaster ovens or $5 Conair shower radios. :-)

Then you have your thieves who steal stuff like Bose Wave radios and sell
'em to pawn shops. That's why it's important to write down serial numbers
of your high end stuff, so it can be traced.

Sony tuners generally have better fringe FM reception than other makes
(there may be other reasons to dislike Sony gear, but pulling in
distant FM stations isn't one of them); you could look at those first.

Huh . . . are the Bose systems really that much better than similar size
radios?

Turn your computer into a sound system. You can play CDs through your computer.

Now that you bring it up, they have a notoriety for being overpriced
and not delivering what the price would imply.

It does seem significant that the poster is suggesting that you can
find plenty of these at pawn shops, at a significantly lower price
than when bought new. To me, that suggests people get caught up
in the hype, and then sell them off when they don't meet the expectations.

I've noticed on Usenet that before saying anything positive about Bose it's
a good idea to swathe yourself in Kevlar. Their stuff if bought new is
probably overpriced due to all the advertising they do, some people don't
like the characteristic "Bose sound," and there seem to be plenty of others
whose dislike of Bose is just generic or a status/snob notion.

I have a Bose Wave in the bedroom. I really like the sound and the
compactness of the unit. I listen mostly to classical music at modest volume
and I feel like it does a good job for what I use it for. I asked for it as
a Christmas gift a few years ago. I sure wish I'd had the sense to check
pawn shops, though. At $100 I think anyone except the most rabid Bose basher
would consider it a decent deal. OTOH, there's quite an element of personal
taste involved in what constitutes good sound. No substitute for trying
different things out till you find what you like best.

Not a stereo, but the GE Super Radio is pretty good at pulling
in stations. Has good sound too.

Here's an original Super Radio on ebay

<http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category051&item091456805&rd=1>

The new Super Radio III can be had there for $39.99.

I saw a live demo of the bose wave radio years ago when they first came
out. The bass didn't sound as clear when it was turned up loud, but at
moderate volumes it did sound like a bigger stereo with a good low end (all
I really cared about then). I don't remember what they were asking for it,
but it was something quite absurd though.

If space and design are a consideration, a reasonably priced one would
definately be an option.

Headphones have their place when you don't want to disturb other
people, but having them on my head for any length of time gives
me the willies and I just want to tear them off because they
get so uncomfortable and hot.

I'd much rather crank up the volume using a pair of 200 Watt
amplifiers driving a good speaker system than put up with
headphones.

If I was gonna buy a dedicated stereo.... Id get a boombox that plays
MP3 files. Like this one....see link

Yep, this is getting off the topic but when I can sit in one place and
listen, what I really like is the sound from my plain little old Sony
Walkman which I use with a good quality set of headphones.

I see tuners (no amp) in thrift shops all the time for $10...$20.
If you have inputs (RCA jacks) on your current stereo,
that could be a frugal deal (or ebay).

A pair of rabbit ears (300 ohm) from the 99 Cent store
might be all the antenna you need.
(TV channel 6 audio is ~88MHz; FM is 88...108MHz.)

For a couple of bucks, you can buy a folded dipole
that you can tape/thumbtack to your wall...or make your own

I don't like headphones so I connected my Walkman to quality speakers
through the computer's sound card and it's great. This way I can record
programs for later as well.

FWIW, I don't use them for volume, I use them for clarity.

Me too. But when you're driving big speakers, you need to
have enough power to run them at what is the natural level
of the sound you are recreating.

check out www.live365.com

it has some annoying popups, but lots of oldies (as well as other types).

Hope this helps

Except in very strong signal areas, all save maybe the very best
tuner/receivers perform better with properly-dimensioned "external"
antennas.

	Thrift store; yard/garage/estate sale; Salvation Army store;
Goodwill store; odd-lots or closeouts dealer/liquidator (some good ones
on WWW); church rummage sales. If looking for specifics, then, knowledge
and patience are primary virtues. IME, for a number of reasons, pawn
shops rarely are good places to shop and cannot begin to compare with
these other choices in price or value, even with SA's and Goodwill's
inflated prices nowadays.
