My Old Futon Mattress

I know it's probably contrary to the aims of this group ... but I've
gotten tired of it, and am thinking of getting a new mattress, if not
a bed.

Anyone have opinions on how to responsibly dispose of an old futon
mattress? It's seven years old. Still useable? Still saleable? Too
easy to get a new mattress?

Thanks!

Donate it to Goodwill if it is still in good shape.

My guess is that the rag collectors now get a large part of their
supply from what the thrift shops were unable to sell. I have seen
very large bales of old clothing that had been prepared for sale in
this form by thrift shops. I beleive the sell it by the pound.
Some of the bales are likely purchased and sent overseas to third
world countries.

You could do what many rednecks do...and just throw it off the side of the
interstate....and/or...... buy 50 cents of kerosine and find a nice little
match.

Run.

How about dropping it at a thrift store?

Aren't there still rag collectors that collect rags & etc for the fibers,
and process 'em in big vats or something and make cloth or paper out of 'em?
Or did that happen only in my previous life?

As far as I'm concerned,it's still saleable.Know anyone with big
dogs that are getting older? It's perfect for that use.
I just bought a large dog bed at a thrift store for one of my dogs
that has hip dysplasia. He was having trouble getting up from
the back porch so I layed it down there for him and it helps
a lot.
Got an area that you can store it for when you have company
come over?

Disease issues limit that option in some states. In PA charities cannot
accept used mattresses or used furniture with fabric and the same items
cannot be sold.

If its in ok shape then give it to a thrift store such as goodwill or
salvation army.
If its trash then check with your garbage pickup and see if they will pick
it up on
your next trash day.

I researched this issue about three years ago and found that the local
(Portland, Oregon) futon stores will "recycle" the futon for a $15
charge. Since the two futons were still in good shape, I rolled them
up, put them on a sheet of plastic on the front lawn with a free
sign. They were gone almost instantly. I saved a $30 recycling charge
and someone is getting some use out of those futons.
