Dear Friends, I am from Taiwan and will take a business trip to the east cost in the late September. Basically, I will have a total of 4 days off in Bostan and/or Atlantic city areas. I am wondering where are the good places for the shore bird watching in the late September or early November? I will have a car with me. So, driving a couple hundred miles for a good location is not a problem for me. Thank you in advance. Sincerely, Chauchin

Very good shore birds to be had there. There is a brief review of the refuge at http://www.theinsider.com/Boston/attractions/2plumisland.htm and a better overview can be had at the Fish and Wildlife Service web site at http://www.fws.gov/r5fws/ma.htm if you can get it to work (I had trouble with it today.) For other places in and around Boston, see http://world.std.com/~sz/tshbdhot.htm In the Atlantic City area go north to Brigantine National Wildlife Refuge (also know as Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge). See the Fish & Wildlife Service web site at http://www.fws.gov/r5fws/nj.htm (hope its back up). -- John J. Collins Whitestone, NY "In the end we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand; we will understand only what we are taught." (Senegalese proverb.)

Take a look at the GORP Regional Birding Guide at http://www.gorp.com/gorp/activity/birding/bird_gd.htm. At the very least Jamaica Bay in New York and Cape May in New Jersey are two of the ten best birding sites in the United States. Of course you will have a hard time distinguishing one shore bird from another but that's what makes them so much fun. ccsu wrote: > > Dear Friends, > > I am from Taiwan and will take a business trip to the east cost in > the late September. Parker River National Wildlife Refuge near Newberyport, MA is a great place. Also, Joppa Flats right in Newburyport. About one hour and 15 minutes north of Boston. I apologize if this shows up twice, but I think the 1st one got bounced. In addition to Parker River you should also bird Cape Ann (Rockport/Gloucester). Not only is this one of the most scenic areas in all of Massachusetts, it is one of the top spots for viewing seabird migration. On a given day you can find sea ducks (incl Harlequin), eider (sometimes King), scoter, loons, grebes & alcids. If the weather is right you may even see some pelagics from shore. Here is a website containing Massachusetts birding locations: http://www.massbird.org/ Good Birding, Al In article <37E62E90.5FB16890@whrc.org>, Martha Tarafa <mtarafa@whrc.org> wrote: > Parker River National Wildlife Refuge near Newberyport, MA is a great > place. By all means Cape May, NJ. Forty miles by Garden State Parkway from Atlantic City. Go to the hawk watch platform at the Cape May lighthouse and you will have all your questions answered by hundreds of birders from all over the world.
