A young couple has just opened up a Wild Birds Unlimited store close by me. I can't believe the high prices. Suet cakes that I can get at Wal Mart for $1.38 each are selling for over $3.00 dollars. I have always made the long drive to the other side of the county to the BirdWatchers Supply Store before, and found them very reasonable, but the Wild Bird prices are going to keep me away I'm afraid. Their feeder poles are ridiculous. I was stopping by to see about a metal pole to put up a BlueBird house that was given to me. They have nice looking, well built stuff, but too pricey. Seems that the poles I have my feeders on now came from BirdWather's Supply, and were less than nine buks for a two piece polel that I have concreted in the ground. A two piece pole at Wild Birds was about $19.00 total. I would be interested inothers comments about birding without having to sell the farm. I have made my own squirrely guards out of two coffee cans that works fine. Mickey W Email mickeyw@mindspring.com

I go to WBU to look at feeders to get idea on how to make them, that's it!! They are the highest priced outfit that I have been to. If you live in my area I would go to "The Feed Store" on Wayzata Blvd (394) just west of 494, the store is owned by a very nice couple that are very friendly and have much more reasonable prices, I got my Hummzinger feeder there for about $5.00 less than WBU.. WBU is obviously not for you. But some folks are less knowledgeable, or would rather spend their free time watching birds than researching solutions or driving all over town to find what they need. They appreciate the good advice they can get at WBU, and don't mind paying a few dollars more for the service. It's like patronizing a real hardware store instead of Home Despot when the expertise is worth much more than the price of the merchandise. -- --- Lanny Chambers, St. Louis, USA http://www.hummingbirds.net/

Certainly a good point Lanny. The folks there do seem to be very knowledgable. Im not really that penny pinching tight, just found them to be a bit higher in prices than other places, especially for a 6 foot metal pole. The only thing I but there is my 25 lb bag of Safflower seed, which was pretty reasonable I thought at about $15 bucks (I think it was the 25 lb, I forget now). I also noticed that they are pretty expensive. I bought my GF feeder for about $5.00 less at one of those nature stores in the mall (Natural Wonders, I think -- same company made the feeder too). I haven't priced their thistle (WBU), but I can get a 10lb bag at Walmart for about $8 to 9.00 and everywhere else it's more expensive. I've also gotten my feeder poles at Walmart for about $10.00, very sturdy and comes w/a plate that you can screw into the bottom of any wooden feeder, and I think it's got another adapter too. LeeAnne -- Remove the obvious from my email to respond. :-) Mickey W wrote in message <37e9c4c7.19506230@news.mindspring.com>... >A young couple has just opened up a Wild Birds Unlimited store close by me. Re: the prices at Wild Birds Unltd: I was just in one of their stores, and yes the prices are high. But they have things that the "Big Box" (read Walmart) stores don't have. You can try out lots of different kinds of binoc before you buy, and I bought a lovely pair of quail earrings for a friend that I am absolutely sure I could not find elsewhere. We never buy bird food at such a store, but we do buy replacement parts for our hummingbird feeders. It is my conviction that we have to strike a balance between the big merchandiser who sells the quantity thing that everyone wants/needs and the small specialty shop that carries things that are not available elsewhere. I would like to see them both survive and be there for me when I need them. Phyllis Wilburn

Mickey, There's something to be said about the craftsmanship to cost ratio. The specialty shop will usually have the unusual, unique that the Wal Marts of the world will not have. Good day!
