Hi all. I'm actualy quite embarrassed to post this question, as I have been feeding hummers for three years now. Today, as I looked out at the feeder right by my window, I was horrified to realize that there was a ton of mold in it. It was clear for days, as it has been cool here. Then I look out, and boom, lots of mold. I quick boiled up a solution and as soon as it was cooled, changed it. BUT, in the meantime, with humers feeding from it, what could happen to them? I had my 6 year old son nearly in tears because I was telling him I had to change it because they could get sick and die. The odd thing is, they never stopped drinking from it. I am never careless with my hummer feeder, and this really took me by surprise. Please tell me, what can happen to a hummer that drinks a moldy solution? I think I need a refresher course! If I ever discover mold growing on them I use a bleach solution but this hasn't happened at all this year- maybe because we haven't been as humid. Keep an extra feeder & change them regularly. Make sure it's dry before refilling too. I'm surprised a hummer would even drink from it. The solution ferments. I imagine you would have drunken hummers! Pris Pris

Hi Judy, We know exactly what you're going through! The best thing to do is to replace the moldy feeder with a clean one, take the moldy one inside and wash it. That way the new, clean feeder will keep your hummers home! Hi Pris and Rooksie, I've always been very careful to clean my feeders, usually every 3-4 days. At the time I posted, it was cool for a long time. It really was the oddest thing. It didn't get that cloudy look until it was too late :-( And every time I wash it, I use vinegar in the water since I read on this ng that it would help. Believe me, I have been more careful, and thanks for the advice. And who knows, maye he kept coming back for the fermented sugar buzz? Maybe he was Otis (from the Andy Griffith show) reincarnated!
