I went home for a visit to North Fla recently and watched 2 pileated woodpeckers play, going round and round a tree and walking on the lawn for over an hour. It was the most wonderful thing I've ever seen in my life. One of my dreams has been to see these birds but I never thought I'd have the opportunity to observe them for such a long period and from such a close range. Urban area, cars coming and going, me running into the house for the binoculars and situating myself - nothing bothered them. Sure wish I had them here in Michigan in my rural area. They seemed to be playing, no other description. They would go from the base of the tree up to about 15 feet and then back down, circling it all the while, looking at each other and making small sounds. No attempt to feed that I could see. Then when they were on the ground they walked around and kept looking at each other, then up to the sky. It was so great. I envy you who have them regularly. Andrea

Andrea, I've seen them in Roscommon, Aman Park (along M45 just west of GR) and my sister sees them regularly in the Cedar Springs area. They are around your/our area. I most often see them close to a small stream in a mostly decidous forest area. Keep looking, they're around our area ;-) What I'm truly envious of, is your seeing Red-headed Woodpeckers. The last one I saw was at Ludington State Park about 10 years ago... See lots of Red-bellied ones, but no Red-headed :-( Leon Fisk Grand Rapids MI Remove no.spam for email ======================== On Thu, 07 Oct 1999 14:28:45 GMT, "Will/Andrea" <aeminier@iserv.net> wrote: >I went home for a visit to North Fla recently and watched 2 pileated >woodpeckers play, going round and round a tree and walking on the lawn for >over an hour. While I have seen Pileateds on several occasions, it has allways been for short durations, only long enough to ID them. Congratulations on a great sighting ````` Phil

I have really been enjoying these posts. I have only seen pileateds once, though there were three of them. I actually went in search of just them. As I was standing in a place called Oakwood Bottoms, I heard the strangest noise. I looked around, and there they were, doing the same thing Andrea mentioned, circling and climbing a tree. I only had a couple of minutes to watch, but they are so cool. And big! Andrea, what a terrific sighting. And to the poster who saw them as their first bird-WOW, lucky you. Also to Leon, at the Bottoms I mentioned, there were tons of red headed woodpeckers and their young. They are very pretty. Also, I've been visited by a red bellied wp for the last couple of days in my backyard. He's a very sporadic visitor, wish he'd stay. I just love woodpeckers. Congrats Andrea!! I saw my first (single) about two or three months ago. It was a truly awe-inspiring sight! The last time I taped them was last Sunday when 2 were in the same dead tree. One was hammering around and the other was just sitting. They don't usually show much fear but they are not as tame as my little downy. I can walk within a few feet of her when she is pecking at the Almond dough suet. -- Roger A. I have to admit I do dearly love my redheadeds. They had babies this year and watching them mature has been fun. There were several here until about 4 weeks ago and then they disappeared. I expect them or others back, though, since I had them all last winter. Every time they go to the suet I just stop and stare - they are truly beautiful birds. What I loved the most about them this year is the way they chased away the redwinged blackbirds. It was odd because they didn't bother any of the smaller birds. Congrats! I also saw my first two pileated's this past weekend in Ossippe NH. I didn't see them in great detail, but caught a good glimpse of them playing around a tree and then they took off. I wished i could've watched them for longer, but at least I get to check them off :-) LeeAnne Will/Andrea wrote: > I went home for a visit to North Fla recently and watched 2 pileated > woodpeckers play, going round and round a tree and walking on the lawn for > over an hour.
