I've been following the postings on this group now for some time, and it seems that this would be a good place to seek a little advise. I've had several unidentified bird photos in my files now for a few years. I'm hoping someone out there may be able to help me ID them. I've posted them at: http://www.wildlegacy.com/unidentified.html Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, George Turner ------------------------------------------------------------------- Wildlegacy.com Web Design * Stock Photography * Wildlife Notecards (916)456-1199 info@wildlegacy.com WEBSITE - http://www.wildlegacy.com -------------------------------------------------------------------

You know that you are obligated to compile the answers and post them here, don't you? We're curious as to the responses... Peter, yes, I will post any responses I get... Actually, I'm looking at this group frequently, so answers can be posted here. I'll make sure any that do not get on the list are posted. Thanks, George On Sun, 10 Oct 1999 13:57:41 -0500, "Peter Weber" <wings@famvid.com> wrote: >You know that you are obligated to compile the answers and post them here, >don't you? George: It would help if you could give some indication of the bird sizes. The top bird could be a Fox Sparrow, but it's a large sparrow (7"). The second bird looks like a Brown Towhee (10"), and the hawk is probably a Red -tailed (note the red cast to the tail on the second picture. You should check out: http://st11.yahoo.com/wildbirdmart/bnacd.html for the easiest identification of all birds. George, I would agree with David Heath's evaluations as to ID all the way. I would only add the following comments to aid in the ID process. BTW, I found all of the information below in the old version of the National Geographic Society Field Guide. Picture 1: Fox Sparrow - the western coastal form "fuliginosa." A high variable species. Here in Louisiana during winter we get the "iliaca" form which has a grayer head and warmer brown tones. To me its one of the more handsome and attractive sparrows. It will also sing on warm sunny winter days here in the south. Picture 2: Brown Towhee - Pacific NW coastal form. Note the "necklace" on the breast just below the throat. The backlighting makes the breast appear darker than it really is. Picture 3: Red-tailed Hawk - another highly varibale species. As David pointed out the red on the tail in the second photo and on the first photo you can make out a faint beginning of a breast band. Most Southwest red-tails don't show a good breast band and have lighter underparts than their eastern counterparts. If I had to go out on a limb I would be 90% sure that this is a "Krider's Hawk", one of the red-tailed subspecies. I would like a better view of the sides and back to be 100% sure. Great photos and enjoyed brushing up on my races of Fox Sparrows. Keep us on our toes with more photos. Good Birding. This split was made long enough ago to make the 1990 Peterson revision. David Heath Portland, OR

The birds have been identified, I can erase the LBB designation on the first two. They are Fox Sparrow and California Towhee, while the third one is a Red Tail hawk. I have several more I'll post when I get the time. Thanks again.
