We use a tripod originally intended for a video camera.  It's sturdier that
others I've seen for spotting scopes.  It's a Velbon S900 Video tripod and
cost less than $100 about five years ago.  The weight is OK if we aren't
hiking a long way.

Hi,

    Some of the rec.photo newsgroups often have postings about
tripods.  The concerns are similar -- stability and weight.

    If it's any help the most popular medium to high priced
tripods are the Manfrotto tripods which are sold in the US by
Bogen.  I use my tripods for photography not birding and I am
pleased with both my Manfrottos and my Sanford and Davis tripods.
both are very stable, very well built, and not too heavy to carry
if you don't plan on trekking into the wilderness.

ABA just did a review of tripods in the latest issue of Birding if you
can get hold of it.  Also try searching the old messages in rec.birds
or rec.photo. I know that there have been some discussions on tripods
there. I have a Manfrotto (Bogen) 3221(W) with 3031 Quick Release Head.
 I am very happy with it after 1 year although some will find it too
heavy.  However, I needed the extra height that this model provides.
