While in Ossippe, NH this past weekend I got a VERY up close look at a Turkey Vulture (one ugly, but cool, bird IMHO). We were driving down a well used dirt road when I noticed it sitting in a tree branch not 20 feet off the road. I stopped and backed up and of course he/she flew away to another spot and that is when we noticed that there were two of them. The next day, they were still there, but there were three of them hanging about. The day after that we did not see them, but of course that doesn't mean anything :-) we could've missed them. They were hanging about in trees that are on a banking that slopes down to a small river. I thought it odd for them to be hanging around and I figured if there were something dead around that they would be eating it. Do they normally just "hang out"? Usually I see them flying overhead. Do you think they could have been resting on their migration? Thanks LeeAnne

They sit in the sun because it straightens their flight feathers. It's a sort of solar preening. Also, just in general, there aren't always good thermals for cruising, and their choice is to flap or to rest. They're cool :) Mary http://www.prado.com/~iris
