I thought it was interesting that I got some junk mail from George W. Bush and the Republican National Committee with the same distintive typo in my address that the NRA has on file. Maybe it's a coincidence, but I don't think so. I hope it's not a new policy of the NRA to start selling membership info. Anybody else get the "RNC Victory 2004" Membership Card and Verification Reply Form? ----------------------------------------------------------- Learn about rec.guns at http://www.recguns.com -----------------------------------------------------------

Recently put my son on the NRA membership rolls, and he has since been recieving a **BUNCH** of political literature-- all Republican, all with the NRA specific unique address typo. if the NRA did not sell it, they gave it away, or are doing the campaign ads themselves. a nice portrait of the President and the First Lady was in one of the mailings as a thank you for his (assumed) donation. BTW, he is too young to register to vote or anything like that.... ~steve (nice to find someone else that does the unique address thing -- it is amazing where the addresses go!) Oh, you bet the NRA sells your address! Just about any company you provide your address to adds it to a list they can sell, NRA included. Some people (myself included) spell their names a little differently each time they fill out a form so you know who's selling your name. Then call them and ask to be added to the opt-out list. Since joining the NRA I have received numerous gun and outdoors-related catalogs and such, but also received a "Things You Never Knew Existed" junk catalog and totally non-gun-related garbage. TONS of it. Thankfully the only phone solicitations have been from the NRA itself... so far. ----------------------------------------------------------- Learn about rec.guns at http://www.recguns.com -----------------------------------------------------------

No, it does not, however many CMP-affiliated clubs have in the club rules that club members must also be members of the NRA before joining. Many of the same CMP-affiliated clubs also participate in NRA sanctioned matches as well. /herb -- Radical Islamist terrorists have made this world more dangerous for the rest of us: They want to maim us. I believe it is a policy of almost all organizations which are strongly involved in political lobbying activities to provide their membership information to the political candidates which the organization feels will best support their cause. The NRA is no better or worse in this respect than most all other organizations that are involved in political lobbying activities. There are some elections for some offices in some districts in which the NRA officially endorses the candidate of the Democratic party instead of his Republican challenger. The NRA doesn't care one way or the other about what party a candidate belongs to. They are concerned only with how a candidate stands on 2nd Amendment issues. I think it is very strange that in most elections the Republican candidate is the one who is most supportive of 2nd Amendment rights. In mailings of political propaganda it is always very interesting to take note of any typos in your name and address. If the typos exactly match the same typos that some organization you belong to has on file, then the typos will indeed be seen as very interesting to other members of your organization. Also the typos will be seen as matters of interest to the candidates who are thought to oppose the views of your organization. I think that a lot of this boils down to whether you think that the 2nd amendment is about your privledge to shoot and hunt. It's not. It's all about the nations founders assumptions that you can't trust governments and only the possibility of an armed populace which could put its collective food down against unjust law makers. Would we have a chance in hell? NO! It's a principle. Based on their defense of the principle the NRA has to find every possible way to keep the coffers stuffed. I have to admit that when I receive 2-3 mailings a week I wonder whether my money is well spent. ----------------------------------------------------------- Learn about rec.guns at http://www.recguns.com -----------------------------------------------------------

rc_p38_pilot@yahoo.com (Jeffrey D.) wrote in message news:<cbie8h$ppp$1@grapevine.wam.umd.edu>... > ... I did also get the RNC Victory 2000. Here's my spin on this: 1. NRA CANNOT sell your name or address. It's against the organizations by-laws, incorporated in the state of NY. Ask the IRS. (IRS sued for NRAs mailng list, IRS lost!). 2. NRA does mailings for like minded orgs, i.e. RNC. Typically, a group would deliver its mailing, NRA would attach labels and mail away. Your name never leaves NRA's posession. 2.5 BTW, if you're worried about getting on a 'list', the Post Office can & does keep records of who receives what (American Rifleman, Guns & Ammo, etc). 3. So what??? If you don't like the mail you receive, throw it away. Would you rather that the NRA censor your mail, only sending things that 'they' think you'll approve of? What if your tastes don't agree with mine? Who's hurt if the RNC & 'W' send you some mail, perhaps you send a few $$ and 'W' wins in November? What if Kerry wins because you sent a few $$ to the Losertarians? Then we all lose!!!! ----------------------------------------------------------- Learn about rec.guns at http://www.recguns.com -----------------------------------------------------------
