A friend of mine has a Lady Smith 1st model he wants to get rid of. It is
fairly good shape (according to the local gun shop), but not shootable,
small crack in cylinder. Good for collector only. If anyone is interested
e-mail me and we will see what we can work out.

What is collectable about a useless firearm, especially a modern one of which
10s of thousands have been machine milled.

Tell him to send it back to S&W to have it repaired. Then it will be
worth something.

Collectable? I don't know but these guys seem to think they are worth
something.

According to my limited research there were approximately 4,575 of the Lady
Smith 1st Model made between 1902 and 1906.

A collectable (albeit in fair condition except for the cylinder crack)?
Maybe some of our experts can give an opinion.

What is the significance of the term "machine milled" in regard to firearms?

This gun is approximately 100 years old. As far as I know there is no
ammunition made for it anyway. I have been told that regular 22 Long Rifle
(which it will chamber) are too strong for it. This may be what caused the
crack in the cylinder in the first place. Do you think S&W would really
repair such an old piece for a reasonable price? It is a collectors item,
pretty much useless otherwise.

They are ignorant of the history of S&W firearms and believe you are
refering to some modern mass produced item instead of one which was
produced in limited numbers early in the prior century.

Somehow I don't think the current incarnation still has parts for a
gun over 100 years old. I believe the OP was talking about the very
1st model .22 Ladysmith, not the various trade-named revolvers and
autos being currently produced. Cylinders get cracked by using
current .22 ammo, they were designed for blackpowder Longs.
