BSA Mk II International

I haven't been able to post for weeks, due to some oddball issue with my ISP.

I have reverted to google for a while until I can get it sorted. In the meantime...

-----

My youngest son is interested in smallbore shooting.

By coincidence, a work friend had a BSA Mk II she no longer needed, and sold
it to me (price later... lets keep some mystery in this story) this
afternoon. She hasn't used it for a number of years - in fact, it hasn't
been used since high school.

It is a Martini action single shot. No idea of the age. I would guess more
than 35 years.

The condition of the rifle I would describe as "fair" to "good" (if I was
being generous) - all metalwork is in pretty good nick apart from some
surface corrosion. The bore is bright (after cleaning) and looks in very
good condition.

Most of the screw heads are burred to some degree - some are pristine, some
look like they have been turned by a coin. Or an axe...

However, none are "welded" to the rifle, and all responded well to a little
gun oil.

It has Parker Hale sights which are in good condition. A little pitted in
places, but functional.

The woodwork is not stunning, as it has a couple of small cracks (no where
important), and a chunk about the size of a small fingernail missing from
the rear end. It has a detachable shoulderpiece on the buttstock - which is
adjustable.

The action is in *very* good condition - no rust and appears to funciton
flawlessly. The trigger is *very* light, I would guess significantly less
than a pound - but I am used to a different style of shooting, so anything
less than about three pounds just feels wrong to me...

The barrel had some surface pitting and a little corrosion - but most of it
rubbed off with oil and a cloth. It has some scratches on the exterior.

Overall, it is not *pretty* but it certainly looks function and competant.

Would any of the small bore shooters here care to offer an opinion as to the
price for such a rifle?

Oh - did I mention it came in a fitted wooden case?

I still have some work to do to clean it up, and haven't test fired it yet -
we are going to the range tomorrow to give it a go, and resight it.

Then the boy can compete with it.

I'll let you know how that goes, but I am anticipating it will shoot well. I
am told it has a number of 100 point (out of 100) rounds under its belt.

And no, it is NOT for sale. If she ever wants it back, I have promised to
sell it back - for what it cost me.

Cheers,

Brenton. Oh - the price? Less than $US45. That is not a typo...

Damn, you stole it! I'm as jealous as can be. I paid $150 USD 15 years ago
for one that's not nearly that nice and didn't have a case. I've since
converted mine to .22 K-Hornet and it's a tack driver. Anyway if you can
find more of these for that price. Tell me first, please... ;o)

Tony

Well that's certainly the deal of the day. It's probably closer to 50

You will get what the market will bear.Offers will vary. Because it is less than
pristine, and thus not a real collectable, the price is automatically lower. If the
case is original and there is an original booklet then in the USA you would get several
hundred $$ - like maybe $300. But since it is a bit battered, then less. I got a Mk V
in pristine shape for less than $300, and I mean PRISTINE. The wood had been refinished
in the Parket hale shop at one point, so it was not totally original. Mind you, I had
to bring it back into Canada as it was out of the country.

All that chops into the value, but won't stop it shooting well.
Why not try Small-bore yourself, and don't forget to try different
    ammo if it acts up.

I would have ripped the pocket out of my pants in my haste to
get the money out before she changed her mind.

Still in NZ. Just have some real oddball problems at the moment.

We have tried it now, and it shoots a treat - definitely better than I
can! I have shot smallbore 3 times in my life, and two of those were
in the last two weeks.

I find it "fussy" - after you get all of the bondage gear on, and get
all of the leather adjusted just so, you get to fire 13 rounds before
you collapse exhausted to the floor.

IPSC is much better fun!

:-)

Still, it is doing wonders for my trigger and breathing control.

Cheers,

Brenton

Actually, I paid her a couple of days after picking up the rifle (I
don't normally carry much cash, and hadn't planned ahead)

Oh, and she offered it to me months ago - we were talking about a
project we were both working on, and the topic drifted to guns - as it
invariably does with me...

:-)

I will be taking her out to the pistol range for a shoot in the near
future.

And if any of you are worried about my immortal soul, I will be taking
my wife as well!

Cheers,

Brenton
