Cheap ammo test

Since you can get some kinds of ammo cheaper, or
almost as cheap as you can reload it, I decided to get
some and try it out.
Some of it was pretty good stuff, but some of it was
pretty junky.

Got 500 rounds of South Korean surplus 30-06. This
stuff is cheap and it`s good. $89 + shipping per 500.
Decent ammo and boxer primed to boot. Supposed
to be non-corrosive, but I`m not taking and chances
with my favorite Garand. I`m cleaning it as if it were
corrosive just in case.
Anyway, I fed 160 rounds of it to my IH M1 Garand.
Worked flawlessly with decent accuracy. Was able to
get 4 inch groups at 100 yard from a sitting position.
About the limit of my ability these days. My eyes are
not as good as they were when I was younger.
Next time I`ll have to take along a sandbag and try this
stuff from a good solid rest.
This ammo is well worth the money.

Got 1,000 rounds of Indian .308 surplus ammo for $90
+ shipping. Sounds too good to be true and it is.
This stuff is pretty sad. It goes bang reliably, and feeds
most of the time, but that`s about it. This stuff is about
as accurate as throwing rocks.
I fed 100 rounds each through a Chinese made semi-auto M14
and a CETME. The M14 had one falure to feed, needed a little bump
to chamber that one round about halfway through the 1st mag.
This rifle may not be quite the same quality as a Springfield M1A,
but it normally works flawlessly and is accurate. Best I could get was
one group a little over 7 inches from a sitting position, most were
more like 8 to 10 inch or worse.
The CETME didn`t like this stuff either. It always extracted and ejected
ok, but there were 7 out of 100 rounds that didn`t want to chamber
properly without some manual help.
Now this rifle isn`t as reliable as it could be, but it normally does a lot
better than this. I generally expect it to jam once in 100 rounds.
After the way the stuff acted in the M14, I didn`t even try for groups
with the CETME.
Be good ammo for guys that like blazing away at something from the hip
as fast as they can pull the trigger.

Also bought some of that Russian steel case pistol ammo with the Wolf
trademark. And a few boxes of Wolf .22 Long Rifle Match Target
ammo.
The steel case stuff was in .380, 9mm, and 45acp.

Fired the .45acp wolf ammo through a 70 series Colt Gold Cup, a Colt Officies`
ACP, and a model 45 Star Firestar. Worked flawlessly in all 3 guns. No failures
of any kind.
I fired it for accuracy with the Gold Cup at 25 yards using a post for a rest.
4 inch groups. Not target ammo, but I`ve seen worse. That Gold Cup will
shoot under 2 inches with my handloads.
Costs a little more than it costs to reload a box of 45s, but not much more.

Fired the .380s through a Colt 380 Government and a Kel-Tek .380 pocket
pistol. Worked ok in both. No failures. Didn`t try for any groups. I could
reliably hit pop cans at 15 yards with the Colt.

Used the 9mm Wolf ammo in an EAA Witness (full size steel frame) and a
model 43 Star Firestar.
The Witness ate it up just fine without any problems at all, but the Firestar
didn`t like it at all. The Firestar failed to extract 2 or 3 times out of every
7 shot magazine.
That Firestar has a slightly weak extractor and occasionally fails to extract
with brass case ammo. Maybe once or twice every couple of hundred
rounds, but the problem seems to be a LOT worse with the steel case stuff.
Most extracted on the 2nd or 3rd try, but 2 of them had to be dug out of the
chamber with a small screwdriver. I`ve never known this gun to have a sticky
chamber with brass case ammo.

I fired the Wolf .22 Match Target ammo through 4 good quality target pistols.
A High Standard Victor, S&W model 41, 3rd series Colt Woodsman Match
Target, and a Ruger Slabside.
Accuracy with this stuff isn`t bad. About the same as CCI standard velocity 22 ammo.
It worked flawless in the Colt and the Victor. The Ruger jammed twice in the1st
magazine but worked fine after that. Maybe the chamber was a bit gummy with
old oil. That gun had not been fired since last summer and I only gave it a quick
swab before I took it out to shoot this weekend.
The model 41 didn`t like this ammo (and it eats almost anything reliably, even
Thunderbolts and Wildcats) It would stovepipe or fail to pick up the next round
in the mag every 10-15 shots. Like the ammo didn`t have enough recoil to push
the slide fully to the rear.
This surprised me. The model 41 generally eats anything without choking and especially
likes standard velocity stuff.
I fed it a couple of mags full of Federal Gold Medal just to check, and it worked fine
with those.

I have been buying my ammo for plinking at gun shows. It is remanufactured
ammo made from once-used casings. I find it cheaper than Sportsman's Guide,
for instance.

250 rounds 9mm FMJ 115 gr $20, for instance.

Ten-X from CA, B&B from Idaho, Denver Bullets from CO, for instance.

I have chronographed it and is seems pretty consistent.

Charles.

How did you find clean up? I find that the Wolf stuff shoots fine, but is
really dirty and I spend an inordinate amount of time cleaning.

Thanks for the info.

While "you get what you pay for" is typical of ammunition,
there's little need in over-paying for plinking ammo so long
as you won't be frustrated with the reliability and it seems
most of it was fair enough.
