KTM comes thru again

Well, I have to say I'm REALLY impressed with KTM right now. After my
latest tranny catastrophy, I sent in all the broken pieces (main shaft, 6
gears, and a set of cases). I guess they were just as weirded out by the
pitting on two (only two) of the gear faces as I was. So here I sit, with a
bike I've owned for a year and three months, and they are footing the tab on
the new parts. Very impressive if you ask me. KTM RULEZ!

They just footed the bill for a complete tranny on a buddy's 03 525SX as
well. All of the teeth had sheered off the gears. Shades of an 83 Maico!!

Good to see them step up to the plate and do the right thing.

Good for KTM!!! and you. A guy I raced with had an 02 CR250 that kept
eating engines because of the airbox problems, they never helped him. He
came off of an 01 KTM, guess what he is riding this year, a KTM. I have
ridden Yamahas for the last few years but am having problems with my dealer
and have been wanting to try a KTM. Your good customer service pushes me a
little further that way.

... I can't help but think you'd be getting a bike that eats gears, just
so you could deal with great customer service. I'd rather ride a great
bike that leaves it's gears in one piece, and never have to talk to
customer service.

And wait a minute, you're saying that Honda has reliability issues? That's
not permitted.

Well, some of you guys have a much more positive outlook than me.
I realize the bike is out of warranty, but year old 6 grand bikes
shouldn't be self destructing. Someone screwed the pooch assembling
the engine, and it's not like its a teething problem on a new model,
either.
I passed on buying a KTM300 (a bike who's concept I love) after
reading way too much about this kind of thing on the KTM forums.
KTM really needs to step up its Q/C.

Yes I mean how can one praise a bike that destructs when it's almost brand
new ? Hell my old KX certainly is not "the brand" to have now a days but
it's 12 year old tranny looks like the day it rolled out of the factory ....

        Yes, celebrate your victory.

However; we will all pay for this and other seemingly generous acts, by
way of higher prices on our next purchase. All manufacturers do it this way,
not just KTM.

True Tom...

Those parts would have cost me close to $1000. I'm sure they cost KTM
around $300. Plus, they get the benefit of having defective parts, and an
opportunity to figure out what the problem is and fix it. Seems to me its
beneficial to all.

I did see "Made in Germany" on the boxes that the gears came in. I don't
know how long they have been using their current supplier for gears, or if
they are considering changing suppliers. The internet sure makes it easy to
hear about other peoples misfourtunes with their bikes. I have never heard
via word of mouth of another person having a single problem with a KTM
tranny. Just something to think about the next time you believe everything
you hear on the 'net.

Entirely possible Tuner.

My point was that information distributed here reaches a far broader
audience than it does in real life (at least fer me). Its easy for
something to be interpereted as a 'problem' when you read about it on the
'net. You can read about a few people's misfourtunes with their bikes, and
people don't realize that there are most likely, a TON of other like bikes
out there with no problems.

KTM takes a big chance every time they do something like they did for me.
Can you say precedent? They had no obligation to fix or fund anything for
me. I open my (very) big mouth and tell everyone how impressed I am with
KTM and their customer service. Now I am worried that people who might
abuse something in their tranny (or other) and break it will send their
parts in to KTM expecting a hand out. Believe me, if I thought for one
moment, that my tranny failure was caused by my own abuse, or mis-use, or
neglect, or thrashing, there is no way in hell I would have bothered sending
them the parts.

I have no way of gaging the magnitude of my tranny problems (as it relates
to what percentage of other KTM owners have had similar issues). I just
know that everyone I have talked in person was real surprised to hear that I
have even had ANY problems with my KTM.

I love my KTM!!!

Jasmelka

A rider next to us at the 2 day qualifier in Hancock, NY broke a brand new

Of course, he was a really fast guy.

Maybe buying parts is KTM`s version of a race contingency program???

Probably true, but not the point. Others will pay for these parts, by
way of higher prices when they buy their next bike.

That's assuming that KTM has "defective" gear sets or inherent weakness
in the design/production of the transmission.

> Seems to me its beneficial to all.

True, if the above is true.

KTM is a good company, I've owned several KTMs (one, however was called
Penton) over the last 30 years, and was never let down by the bikes or the
company.
