I had the scare of my life today..One of my best friends and my favorite riding buddy Derek stopped over today on his Honda Saber. When he got off the bike he almost fell over and was shaking terribly. When I asked him what was wrong he told me about how there was a truck stopped dead with no tail lights around a blind turn right up the street from the house.Derek was doing the speed limit ..for a change...and had to make the choice of hitting the truck..or hitting a telephone pole. He thought he had a better chance by aiming for the pole.He clipped it and ended up in the field. Somehow we was able to keep his Saber from going down. Derek has to have the BEST riding skills I have ever seen in my life and even he knows he isnt invincable so he always wears his helmet and long pants.Thank God he wasnt hurt..but the Saber has some damage on it..I went up to where it happened to pick up the parts he lost. It took me over an hour to calm him down enough to where he wasnt shaking and was able to ride his bike across the street and up the hill to his house.I still dont know how he kept that monster bike from going down..I saw the skid marks and where he ripped the grass up.Derek has taken me for rides on the back of the Saber and its a beast. I guess my moral is to make sure your lights all work and not do stupid things..you never know when a biker wont have the skills to avoid you.Sometimes it isnt the biker doing stupid things that gets them hurt or killed.I dont know what I would have done if something would have happened to him ..he's my best friend and also my tadpole (guys between the age of 21-26 who do stuff for ya just because they like hanging with ya..everyone needs at least one). Glad he's allright! The trick here would have been to not over-ride the vanishing point. If you can't see all the way through the turn, make sure you're riding at a speed that'll allow you to come to a complete stop if something unexpected like this truck is sitting on the other side of the bend. Unfortunately it'd damn hard to remember to do when you're out there having fun and enjoying yourself... It's also a real good idea to avoid locking the wheels at all costs. You need both wheels to have traction in order to perform an evasive manuver in case a window opened up between the truck and the pole... Not trying to be a jerk, just trying to pass along some helpfull tips. I almost got myself killed last year when an unfamiliar turn I was in tightened up. If I was following the above rules, I wouldnt have had to change my pants afterwards. :) -marc
