Protective gear report

I tested a new piece of protective gear yesterday--a camelback hawg. It's
a great back protector.

The SF Bay area turned cool yesterday, so my son and I went out to
Carnegie OHV park and had a blast. Wind at 25 mph, but temp. was probably
80 at the most.

There was no one on the trails by late afternoon, and we decided to try
some of the hillclimbs, despite poor traction. Most of the hillclimb
routes were covered in little hardened clay clods that acted like ball
bearings. We made it up some of the medium routes, and made our way over
to the water tower. We sat there, stared at the climb, finally I said I'll
go first. Got a head of steam and motored up past the first plateau, but
as I headed up the second half, quickly began losing traction. I tried to
get sideways so I could step off uphill, but before I quite get there, hit
a bump that bucked me off, and I wound up flying downslope
backwards...butt hit first, then back, then head cracked down. I'm sliding
down the hill on my back, looking up the hill at my bike, then got
sideways and rolled a time or two. I finally stopped sliding, and looked
down at my son, wondering if he was heading up to give me a hand...NOT

He's fallen off his bike, holding his sides, laughing his ass off at his
crazy old man.

The camelback took the brunt of my fall, and came through without a
scratch. Nice soft cushion when I hit, and I took a big swig when I got
back down. Helmet and chest protector and elbow guards helped a bit too.

The strange thing though is that my elbow guards are unscathed, but
underneath them my jersey has 3 holes, and my elbow an inch long
rug-burn-like scab now. Somehow the impact transferred through them, and
got me.

We're both laughing about it still.

And I bought it from REI, which probably does the same thing. I think I
saw a Camelback ad in the last issue of Dirt Rider, too. I paid way too
much in taxes to the state of California, and they're not gonna let me
ride my red-stickered bike anywhere close from July 15 to Oct...

Camelback sells a lot of their product to the US military, does that help
even up things?

How about if I agree to write a letter to an elected official about
supporting OHV use in public land for every dollar that Camelback and REI
donated to land grabbers from my purchase?

Well, then thanks, I guess I fit right in here!

Actually, I was serious about doing penance for my evil ways. I'm not
going to stop buying Michelin tires that are made in Spain if I think
they're the best tire for me, and I'm still going to buy crud from REI if
they've got what I want at a good price, just because the owners or
manufacturers don't ride dirt bikes.

But, I let politicians and bureaucrats know that I think OHV use is a Good
Thing (tm).

REI donates a fair amount of the money you're giving them to anti-OHRV and
also eco-extremist terrorist groups. They are the one store that I
absolutely, positively won't support.

I wouldn't piss on REI even if they were all on fire ...

Good ridin' to ya,
