I have a chance to by a cherry '92 sportster with extras
for about $6500. It's red, has a corbin seat, windshield,
pegs, bags, Thunder(?) pipes, large tank and some chrome.

Is this a reasonable price? Any known mechanical problems?
I would really like to have a '93 DynaGlide Low Rider but
the cost is more than double than what I can buy the sporty for.

I am fairly big and my legs felt scrunched on the pegs, but
ok on the highway pegs. Can the pegs/brake/shifter be moved
forward?

Will I be happy with the sporty or will I always long for
the 80s?

Thanks in advance,

Ed

Well, for $6500 and about 400 more you could buy a brand
new 93XLH1200, and have a warranty also. The goodies that
are on it now are worth only about have their new value. A
new 93XLH1200 with peanut tank, and 1 color is about 6990.
Opt for the new, you also asked are there any associated problems
with the EVO sporty, the only known problems mechanically
are internal to a bearing on the clutch basket(alternator), this
is not a problem if you do not do Hole Shots, change you transmission
fluid, and have the bearing looked at and or replaced at 5 years or
20,000 miles. If the tension on the primary chain is adjusted properly
and fluid(Xmission) changed(I change mine every 4,000 miles) you
should have no problems at all with the sporty.
Chances are, that you will long however as you put it for the 80cu in,
so you have the option of looking for a used 80 during the off riding
season or buying a new or used sporty. Enjoy and welcome aboard!

I had to think about this awhile before I responded. I'm new to the Harley
way of thinking, also, and have been looking at the used bike listings in
the newspaper for about 3 months.

I am currently waiting for arrival of a '93 XLH1200. I ordered one with
a two-tone paintjob. The following list shows what my delivered cost
will be when it gets here in Feb/Mar/April:

   '93 XLH1200 2-Tone paint List Price: $6995
    Freight to Dealership : $ 121
    Dealer SetUp : $ 140
    MD State Sales Tax (5%) : $ 362
    MD Tags and Registration(2 years) : $ 90
                                       ------
                                        $7708

I'm also getting a few other things with the bike, like a low backrest,
re-locating the turn signals to the lower triple clamp, and putting on
the low-rise XLH883 style handlebars, which will run a couple hundred
dollars more.

The cost of the 3.25 gallon tank varies according to color: approx. $315
Black, approx. $360 for a solid color, approx. $400 for a two-tone color.
According to the '92 HD Accessories Catalog, the cost of windshields varies
from $113.95 to $217.95, depending on size and model.

The Corbin seat? I saw one for a Sportster at a dealer, I think it cost $175,
but I'm not sure. The pipes may have cost $150-175. I don't know about
the bags. Hi-way pegs for the Sportster cost $56.95 - $61.95 depending on
peg style (according to the '92 Accessories Catalog).

In the local Baltimore newspaper, I've seen several 2-tone paint '92XLH1200s having from 173 to 2500 miles for an asking price of $6500-$6995. I think
the list price on my Brother-In-Law's '92XLH1200 was $6295? Not sure, but
that's within a few hundred dollars.

I've read from some more experienced HD owners here that resale value for
any accessories added to the bike is no more that 50% of their cost.

My Opinion: Depending on the # miles and condition (cherry, as you mention)
I would recommend that you buy the bike. You will probably still have to
pay tax on the bike when you register it( at least you have to in MD). It
already has many desirable items on it (IMO), like the seat, tank, pegs, and
bags. (Believe me, you WILL want the big tank on a Sportster...I've ridden
Brother-In-Law's bike about 650 miles in the last 3 weeks, and I've run out
of gas on it twice...I'm just not ready to stop riding and get gas every 70
miles or so! It takes 12-15 weeks to get a factory painted tank, according
to my dealer).

There are other considerations, though, such as financing and warranty.

Good Luck

It's not unreasonable. The five speeds trannys overcame
a problem with the four speeds which involved the
shifter mechanism. Since the 92's have not been
out all that long they may or may not develop
mechanical problems in the future. If its a belt
  drive even better.

If that is what you really would rather have then make
  the stretch.

Yes, there are several kits available, but a bit pricey for
   me.

Yes to the first question and probably yes
to the second also. The sporty is great for in town
driving but the big boys are better for distance.
Although I did ride my 1200 sporty to sturgis this
year, (5000 miles, three weeks) if my FXR had been
together I would have taken it.
