Have just been posted on abpmh . I hope y'all are enjoying this rebuild as
much as I am .
Miked the jugs this morning , and they have about .001" out of round , and
about the same taper - Smallest dimension is 3.438 at the top sideways ,
biggest is 3.440 front to back at the middle . At least for now , the jugs
are staying put .
Bought a few tools and plan on buying more . The only thing I need someone
else to do is ream the guides and maybe grind the seats if they're not
concentric with the new guides .

Yo, Snag... Seeing as you're getting a lot of replies from
interested folks not getting the binary NG, and seeing as
Donna A turned me on to a server so *I* can get them, and
seeing as I just know you'll cough up the $8 and two Miller
Lites (less carbs than Coors), I started you a folder on the
server:
http://www.utm.edu/~relmore/Whatzit/Snag/

I'm doing it low budget, copying your original message into
a text file, then adding the pics into a folder with a
posting sequence number. I'm to lazy to copy/paste/edit all
the replies. I figure most folks out there know how to
navigate with their "back" button, too.

I'll catch them as you post them as I have time.

Bahh, I'm cursed by a lack of access to the binaries group at home, and I'm
sure Patriot will make sure they're off my server by Monday. Anyway, glad
to hear you're enjoying the rebuild, it certainly can be enjoyable, if not
costly. <g>

Now *this* is what this place is all about . Where else will someone go
out of their way to do something like this for the benefit of people he may
never meet ?
Roger , name your poison and I will bring it with me in June .
I'm looking for the reamer(s) for valve guides and keep coming up empty .
Anybody out ther got a source ? It looks like when I finish mine , I get to
do another for my buddy , Larry . His smokes too , but he also wants to
bump the compression to 9 or 9.5 too . I think he wants to see if I screw
mine up before he lets me do his ...
Anyway , thanks again , Roger , I really appreciate it . And I will keep
posting each step of the way . Next up is clean - up . Gotta get all that
nasty old carbon out of the heads and ports , and who knows , some of the
port may go away too .
  I'll keep ya "posted" !

Well, I met Tom and Arie at Smileys, maybe I can catch Tud
if I head up north someday.

Naw, just consider it your TN tax dollars at work for *you*.
Play the lottery... maybe some of those Tech Fee funds from
tutions can buy me more disc space... <g>

The cheers are much appreciated !
Well , I just made another investment in tooling . Finally tracked down a
supplier of adjustable reamers so I ordered some . Getting 3 that go from
5/16 to 13/32 which should handle the majority of valve guides . These are
imported tools , and I don't expect them to last a lifetime . But they
should do the job at hand . Next on my list is an inexpensive seat grinder
...
As far as I can tell , valves is valves , whether they're in a mack truck
or a moped . If you can do one , you can do them all - just a matter of
scale . They all gotta slide and seal ...
My wife is so pissed ... I get *way* too into it when I start a project
like this .

That's great! Best way to do things, in my opinion. That way you get
knowledge, you know what's in your engine, and you get to keep all the
tools. Win, win, win.

Not going to be of much help to you, 'cuz I kind of jumped from panheads to
evos without getting much involved in shovels, but I'm out here in the

Well , it's got an Andrews "A" grind with solid lifters in it . Supposed
to give a pretty good boot in mid and upper RPM's . But then some think it's
the wrong cam for a dressed out FLH . I don't know ... yet .
I plan on running what I got for a while , see if it fits my riding style
. If I find I want something with more low end grunt , I'll talk to ya . But
it feels pretty good at low RPM's to me , more torque than the Sportster
low down .

I wondered about the solids too . Was told by someone that the ramps on
this cam were meant for solids . I'd rather have hydraulics , less fuss and
quieter . But again , that's something that'll work for now . I'm in that
space where I'm getting short on cash (and it woulda been a lot shorter if
my ins co hadn't paid me for the bike) and I'm not back up to full time at
work .

Yep, stupid me, I looked at their sight and didn't even see the under
construction thing. I clicked on one of their links though and it worked, anyway
here's contact info. K-Line Industries Phone: 616-396-3564. I've been using
their stuff for about 15 years and never had a problem. If you buy a genuine
moco gasket set for your Shovel it'll come with a set of K-Line valve seals in
it (or at least they used to). Now that I got that out of my system I have a
question, do you need a cam for that Shovel? I've got a few.

The A grind is pretty mild. To me it's actually the ideal cam for a dresser.
All of the cams I have are *way* bigger than the A grind, you might want to just
leave it alone. The only thing I would do would be to lose the solids, no reason
in the world to put solids on an A grind. I might have a set of them too.

I'm definitely interested ! One question - is the adjustment on the
tappets ? I have solid pushrods , the adjustment is on the lifters .

I *always* put hydraulics on the A grind, works great. I thought I might add
I've got a set of used competition cams hi perf hydraulics that could be had for
a song (or a little donation to Eddie). If you'd be interested let me know.

The adjuster is on the pushrod. It's a kit with pushrods and all.

I hope you didn't buy them from Enco. Their adjustable reamers are JUNK.

Le'me dig'em out tomorrow, I've got 'em in a storage building at my shop. Once
they're out I'll post another reply here to let you know. I figure something to
Eddie will cover it fine. The lifter blocks are chrome and have a chip in the
chrome on one of them. You could touch it up or just paint them if you want. I
had 'em in my bike and left them chrome 'cause they looked ok like that. I'll be
in touch.

Agreed, I was at the auto shop the other day looking for a wire brush that I
could use to clean out the sludge trap when I saw a benchtop blasting
cabinet on sale. Just for the hell of it I called the SO to see how much
trouble I'd get in if I brought it home, needless to say I didn't bring it
home. The next day we got an unexpected check from the gov. and she asked
if it would cover the cabinet, so tomorrow I'm picking up a brandy new
blasting cabinet. Sure, the money could be used to buy more important stuff
like bike parts, but I figure if I try to change directions with it she
might change her mind, so I haven't mentioned it since and don't plan to
until I get the thing home. <g>

I saw the pics on Roger's site, you're right, this place can be pretty great
sometimes, great looking bike btw.

Thank you , kind sir . By the time it's back together , I plan on having
it back to Birch White , which is the original color . That way I won't have
to paint the bags and tourpak til next winter .
Currently I'm polishing up the rocker boxes a bit . Gonna finish one then
take a shot of both for contrast . They be rough right now ...
I've also decided to go ahead and hone and rering while I got the top end
off . Just makes sens to do it now. My buddy Larry has been egging me on to
put some hi-comp pistons in . Told him I wasn't gonna , but I'm thinking of
slipping some in there w/out telling him ...

That's some pretty nice stuff ! Tell ya what I'm gonna do . I'll send a
check for 100 bucks to Banker for the lifter kit (actually it'll be a bit
more , I owe donations for some other stuff) . Do you need something to
cover shipping ?

I got 'em out and am getting ready to post a couple of shots of 'em on the
binary group as soon as I get the pics resized. When I bought 'em they cost
nearly $600 if you can believe that. I will send them to you for a reasonable
donation to the EKIII fund considering they're used. Maybe $75 or so would be
fine if it suits you. The front exhaust pushrod has a little damage and a little
grinding to clear the pushrod tubes. They otherwise are fine and what is wrong
amounts to nothing more than cosmetic. I used them for about 2000 miles so
they've got a lot of life left in them.

Here's a link to them at J&P with the tech info on them

You did look at the images at abpmh? There are a few small flaws in them. Just want
to make sure you saw them.

Try this server, it works for me from work and home.

Thanks Paulie, I'll give it a try, but to be honest I think it's my ISP. I
use a notebook and it works fine from the office but doesn't from home, and
the ISP's news servers show ABPMH but it's always empty. A little
unrelated, but when is someone going to put out an on-line news readers for
PocketPC?

I found a newsreader for my Palm Tungsten W. It sucked!! I eventually
trashed it because it kept locking up and I would have to reset the damn
thing to get it restarted.

Here is the first page of the manual -

<Begin manual>
Internet Messaging Client
MsgAgent 0.37b for PalmOS
MsgAgent is an internet messaging client for PalmOS.
Currently MsgAgent supports internet mail(SMTP/POP3) and net news(NNTP).
This version is a freeware.
Features:
* Fully supports SMTP, POP3, NNTP directly by Palm device with the modem.
* Once tapping Sync button (or push Sync button on Palm modem), MsgAgent
syncronizes messages with multiple mail and netnews servers.
* MsgAgent is the first messaging client for Palm which is internationalized
for many languages.
MsgAgent supports many charsets (Arabic, Baltic, Central European,
Chinese(Simplified, Traditional), Greek, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Thai,
Vietnamese, Western European)
* No restriction for maximum message size. (but displays only the first
32kbytes)
Configurable maximum message size.
* Up to 65000 configuarable servers and 65000 folders/newsgroups for each
mail/netnews account.
Easy to add new servers/folders/newsgroups.
* Supports In-Reply-To, References header field.
Never cut off threads.
* not use the standard Mail application in PalmOS.
Viewer and Editor are integrated in MsgAgent.
* Supports APOP for POP3. (recognized automatically)
* Supports NNTP authentication.
<End manual>

I could sync throught the phone or the desktop cradle and really liked being
able to read while mobile but I couldn't take the problems that it was
causing because it is my phone, e-mail, and palm when I travel. Not sure if
they have a version for pocket PC. I found it through google searches.

My ISP has sucky news coverage. I simply subscribe to newsguy.com
for about $50 a year. It's worth the money.

I'll have to see if they have a PocketPC (Windows) version, in the interim
I've been using google, which is usually way behind.
