G'day, Webwork finally paid off. The Swedish Harley Drags Association just gave me a brand-spanking new Canon 300D as a thanks for the work on their website so now you're all in trouble as I'll be pestering the ng with race pics this upcoming season. This year I've also gotten a three stepped header race exhaust, a 6-piston brake caliper, new chain, free dynotime, plus mebbe some used tires. The used tires: these tires are Pirelli high performance tires used in a 600 cc roadracing class. They're not slicks and the team in question runs them one heat and then changes them out, in practice and testing they run'em not an hour and then put on new ones. They are currently down in Spain for geeting track mileage and there will be lots of used tires out of those sessions. The wear on these tires are pretty much all on the sides and the plan was to use them on the UglyGlide for dragracing which should be pretty much perfect, but being on a low-budget I figgered that maybe I can use them for regular road riding as well. Thread is there with lots of rubber left, the racers switch out the tires on such short intervals due to the heat hardening the rubber out on the very sides of the tires. I assume these guys have quite different requirements for a tire than me roadriding the FXR. It's not like it's a knee-dragging bike, is that hardening really of any concern whatsoever for me even if I like to hit the turns fairly hard? Any input from the high-performance riders on the good or bad about using these tires in regular riding on the street is much appreciated. Regards PiPPi #66, BS#13, SENS

A) They SUCK in the rain B) They must come to operating temperature to function correctly C)If the sides are significantly worn, the profile has changed and handling characteristics are affected. (Much like running one that is worn in the center) Just my $.02 my Swedish friend. MrScottly, the "ex-road racing junkie" Asshole #54

Euro rules are quite different from USA rules, as I believe you guys run under FIM sanctioning and we run under AMA sanctioning. I am not familiar with FIM, but in AMA Supersport classes the tires have to be DOT (Department of Transporation) street legal tires. Basically, these tires have one rain groove cut in them every so many inches to make them barely legal. They are great....on dry road. In the rain, forget it. Even though races are run in the rain, if the riders know the rain is going to happen, they will switch to better rain tires and take the DOT tires off. In Formula 1 racing, the bikes run straight slicks on dry pavement. Problem there is that a glass-full of water can dump you on your ass if you hit it right. > > > B) They must come to operating temperature to function correctly > > Right again. I'll start each ride with a burnout. Burnouts will not bring these tires to operating temp. They heat up mucho slower than drag slicks. If you watch road race events, in the events where a warmup lap is not allowed, the crews use electric heaters on the tires before the race. MrScottly#54

Hm... These guys seem to be pretty serious so I don't assume these are plain high perforamance street tires. Do roadracers have limiting tire rules for the different classes? > A) They SUCK in the rain Right. > B) They must come to operating temperature to function correctly Right again. I'll get back on this when I get one of those tires so I know what the exact model they are. Thanks PiPPi #66, BS#13, SENS
