Have a cup of coffee with me and read this article from NZ. Says a white
helmet has a 24% lower risk than black Food for thought.

I heard that.

Look, this whole white helment thing may be true, but if I was really
overly concerned about this kinda shit, I wouldn't be riding a
motorcycle to begin with.

Motor cops wear white helmets. Ask Topp about cars moving out of his
way when he's on Drifter.

That study and its results are absolute bullshit. First, how many
riders wear bright colors or helmets? Not many, a very low number of
the total, thus, the percentage of accidents of that population will
be lower when compared to the larger population that wears darker
colors. Next, here is a quote from the study; "..lower risk of crash
related injury than those who were not wearing such materials.."
Notice that each "statistic" is saying "crash related injury" not
total number of accidents. What the fuck does the color of my gear
have to do with the extent of my injuries? If I take my brain bucket
and paint it fluorescent orange and do an endo at 80mph will I get
less of a head injury than if I left it black? Total bullshit (like
my reply). If I dye my jeans yellow will they resist the road
dragging longer?

As a side note, if you were to say that the bright colors make the
biker more noticeable to the cager then I would say there might be
something valid in that argument which helps support the fact that
"loud pipes save lives." Yes a self-proved fact as I have personally
used my loud pipes as a horn many times to get noticed or freeze deer.

And in closing, shit, I forgot what I was going to say! Oh well, have
another round on my tab.

Ride free or die.

Because a 'real' biker never wants to scratch his chrome it would follow
that wearing a chromeicized helmet would make for a safer rider, and
therefore a result in less injuries and possible fatalities.

Anyway that's my fucking 'report'. Thanks for the drink.

I am a firm believer in the argument for bright colors. When
I commute or ride long Hwy. distance I wear my Hi-Viz Yellow
AeroStich suit. IMHO the color causes the brain to pause,
forcing the owner of the brain to think. [or puke]

Let some idiot hit me and say they did not see me....

If you took all the bikers in New York and lined 'em up end-to-end pointing
to California
some squid from New Jersey would try to pass.

It'll happen, just a matter of time, and they'll say exactly that.

I ride a fuckin' white cop bike, complete with siren, and wear a white
bucket. They still pull out in front of me. Shit their pants, but
that's usually after th' fact.

I think that may be one of the reasons white helmets are safer. In a black
leather jacket and white helmet, motorists pause for a split second - giving
us the safety edge we need. They "see" us.

Some "bikers" tend to think that since their headlight is on then they
are visible to all. Never good to take anything for granted.

I don't know where you live, since I live in Connecticut I keep a
helmet in my saddlebag at all times. Nice to have when I ride into
Massachusetts or New York, both of which are mandatory helmet states.

you sure got that right .. after all, cars pull in front of other cars
all the time .. it's not that they CAN'T see you or them, it's just that
they don't really look .. too busy on their cell phones or thinking of
work or the movie they just rented etc ... it's just a matter of time
before someone pulls out in front of you .. you can't prevent it, so
you'd best be prepared and keep your eyes open and your head on a swivel
... drive safe & aware at all times ...

I was stuck at the scene of an accident a few years ago. An accident
where a car turned left into a big yellow urban bus. You don't get any
more visible than a big yellow bus.

Since I was stuck and split to the front of the line, I could hear the
conversation between the driver and the cop taking his statement. He
said, "I just didn't see him..."

The reason people get into accidents with other vehicles is because
they aren't paying attention, and your visibility is only slightly
relevant. You're better off with "active visibility" like vastly
brighter than normal halogen driving lights (as anyone who's ridden in
front of me about how noticeable and hard to ignore those lights are on
my bike, even in the brightest daylight), and converting your rear turn
signal lamps to running lights.

As for people noticing you because you look like a cop, I hear traffic
reports on the radio all the time about cops being involved in
accidents, so I wouldn't bet on it.

I'm increasingly of the opinion that no motorcycle study is correct.
People conducting studies can always find a way to manipulate the
numbers to come to verify whatever premise that is in the original
hypothesis of their proposal.

If they didn't, then the whole study would have been a waste of time.

If I ever bought a lottery ticket, and subsequently won a lot of money,
one of the things I would do is create a foundation that would do
nothing but studies designed to come to the opposite conclusion of
whatever other study was being done. If the evidence was so strong that
it couldn't be validated, then the study could certify that the
original was incontrovertable.

Actually that's what all studies do, test hypotheses.

Most Kiwi motorcyclists would agree that having your headlight on is still
the best way of displaying your presence
to a cage driver. Down here in New Zealand, riding with your headlight on is
not compulsary.
Having said that, we could all dress in bright orange, wear white helmets
and ride with our headlight on and some
clown would still drive into us!
