BTW, both of the above are the ones taken by the WSP. They are of the
actual scene before the bike and the deer were moved.

Well, I hit a deer today on my favorite road. I swear it jumped right into
my path from heavily wooded area to my left. I couldn't avoid it. I wish I
could have, because it sucked to watch that deer die. I couldn't go right
because of a ditch (which I ended up in anyhow) and the deer was coming from
the left so I couldn't go there either. I know I locked the back brake
(which I never use, so that is kinda weird) and fishtailed then I plowed the
deer and highsided into said ditch. I was doing about 40, maybe 30 by the
impact.

I am ok, I have a pretty good concussion. I have a tiny little bit of rash
on my right wrist, I am pretty sure this is from my watch, which was
toasted. I was wearing full gear. Suomy Gunwind, HJC leather Jacket, Joe
Rocket Back Protector, First gear gloves, aplinestar boots, and these cool
First Gear leather/cordura pants (speed pants they are called.)

I was pretty scared. I totally got the wind knocked out of me, and was
going into shock. When they strapped me down on the back board I started to
panic pretty good. I don't remember getting Xrays or an MRI, but I did, and
everything was fine. I was messing up words, and phrases and couldn't
remember stuff for about 6 hours. The wreck happened at noon, and I was
doing much better (enough so to go home) by 9.

I hope the insurance company totals my Triumph. I would like to get a brand
new one to replace it, but we shall see what transpires.

I am just glad I was ok, and happy to have friends like Jim (He was right
behind me) who was a godsend during the whole ordeal (He even got AAA to
tow my bike to the dealer then picked me up at the hospital.) and Peckhammer
who comforted and abused me at the hospital. I never want to crash again...

There is also this thread started by Peckhammer. I think you will be a ble
to google it up yourself with these references

--
lunch ride causualty -- our buddy Andrew is in the hospital

The subject line says it all. He hit a deer today on High Bridge Road on
the company lunch ride that is so often the subject here lately. All I know
is that he was able to walk after the accident, which is quite a feet, no
pun intended. The deer probably got the worst of it since Andrew is a big
boy. And the bike didn't fair too well either. It is still out there on the
side of the road. Andrew is in the hospital. More later...

Then there is the one started by Daniel Bannon:

Venison:

Our man Andrew seems to be bruised but basically OK after his
encounter with a doe in a fairly brushy part of Washington State.

I've ridden High Bridge maybe a dozen times, and have NEVER seen a
deer or other wildlife there. Especially not near Noon, the time of
his wreck. From my modest understanding of the habits of ruminants,
they usually stay low mid-day. Yesterday was a bit warm for this
area, too, temps in the 80's. Hmm.

I've seldom seen a man "hoping" his ride was wrecked, but since he's
well-insured something good may come of it. I rode his Triumph RS the
other day and am vastly impressed by the bike's do-everything
competence. One could do far worse than one of these. I suggested a
Daytona as a replacement, but that's my gig.

Anyway, seems like that wreck was a bolt from the blue. From Jim's
eye-witness account, it all happened very fast. I asked Andrew if he
jammed the rear brake and not the front, but he believes not. That's
a newbie error, and improbable (though not impossible) since the guy's
been riding four years.

I know another guy who high-sided while avoiding a car pulling out
because he grabbed too much front brake too fast. Damned if you do,
damned if you don't. That one would have picked me off, too.

Can someone supply a link either debunking or validating the
effectiveness of deer whistles? They sound like snake oil, but some
hard facts one way or another may sway the argument. Anecdotal
evidence, such as "I've been riding with deer whistles for twenny
years and not hit one, sonny" won't cut it, since I've been riding
seventeen years without them and never plowed down bambi, either.

Two thumbs up for : 1) Suomi helmets 2) good riding gear 3)
full-coverage insurance.

Thanks for the pics. If thats damage to the deer and bike doing 30 or 40 at
impact, the guy that cult a deer in half earlier this year, and sprayed a blood
and guts pattern forward of the point of inpact must have been doing *well over
100. He survived without a scratch apparently.

Did you get the concussion from hitting the ground with your head, or was it the
deer impact that did the damage.

Just so you know, If I had been on your bike at the time Id of probably done the
same thing you did... not much choice sometimes.

Some folks can be humorous any time they desire, like the infamous Mr. Hung,
through sheer outrageousness. Others, though, have their shining moments
less often... This gem is certainly one of Andrew's moments. I'm taking
this to mean he's recovering from the slaying rather well.

It is usually the last thing a democrat deer ever does that ultimately
accounts for finally taking responsibility for its actions. [1]

Ahh, once agian you are missinformed about truth, facts and the realities
of life.
As for me I see the reality of th e situation...because of over
protection, predator elimination and idiots in who don't want to know where
their food comes from. Deer are now more populous than they have ever been
in North America. So tell me what is so great about all these damn deer?
That's why in texas you can shoot '5' deer per season...well ok it boils
down to 'two bucks, two does and one Mule Deer' of course with the size of
the dang things you have to shoot 4 white tails to get a decent amount of
meat.
I speak from a decidedly neutral libertarian view point...you damn yankees
wouldn't know how to deal with deer anyway.

Andrew confessed to rec.motorcycles:

> HTH Reed, Hope you had a nice vacation....RIDE A TRIUMPH, NOW!

Thanks for the background.

Glad to hear you're all right, Andrew. Sorry, but as you're out of the
hospital, this doesn't qualify as a deathbed request, anymore ::grin::.

OTOH, an excuse to ride a motorcycle is never a bad thing, and I've already
been propositioned for a Triumph Test by Monroe, so Yas, Suh!

Reed.

Hey have some sympathy for the animals!!!! God made 'em as cautionary
roadblocks for bikers... If it weren't for them, we'd all be out squidding
around... God makes it a little better for us when he sends a deer instead
of an SUV or pedestrian. God let us make sportbikes, too. He wanted to
reduce the oddballs of the gene pool, squids. The deer are just a check to
make bikers think "Hmm... Maybe I should take this corner slightly slower in
case there's somethign there." It's all a balancing effect towards the
norm.

actually, SDITW had already had one incident that day with a lawnmower that he
tried to jump. one of his antlers was bent out of shape. SDITW's friends tried
to convince him not to jump but he insisted that he was safe and sane and
threatened lawsuit if anyone tried to intervene. still, SDITW thinks it wasn't
his fault and blames his hooves and his state of mind. >;-P~

What the hell is that suppose to mean? I'm in Wisconsin, the state with the
RECORD white tail harvest, some 600,000 last year, if I recall (4 of those
were mine...). Yes, we harvested more deer than Texas. If you hunt the
southern farm units, field dressed bucks weigh in at 200+ lbs with an
occasional 300 lb. animal showing up from time to time. From a healthy doe,
final meat tally is around 50 lbs. And yes, grilling is nice, but there are
so many recipes for venison floating around here that you could dedicate a
whole NG to the subject.

The deer/vehicle accidents are so bad (40,000+) that the state gave the
University of Wisc. $500,000 to study the problem. Finally, we will get an
answer to the "do deer whistles work?" question.

Finding deer in the road at pace is terrifying, but last Friday night, I had
4 black angus cattle barrel onto the road. I was lucky, as I caught just a
hint of eye reflection right before they came onto the pavement, allowing me
to lay off the throttle and brake without too much panic. I missed them by
5 feet. I spent the next hour helping the owner "round 'em up". That part
was actually fun. I was chasing cattle off road, on a motorcycle (KZ-750),
with the owners permission. Yes, life up here behind the "cheddar curtain"
can be strange at times.

Bo-hoo. I don't get it here. And I've moved and I'm searching for
a job in my new location, so there's not much use in getting it
added...

Heh. You're lucky in that you work for a private enterprise...
It's against state law for me to have games on this computer... [1]

I paid 470.25 for my "new" tranny... and it's got a noise in 2nd.
Hopefully, as you said, yours will be much easier to find. How many
miles does your truck have on it? I had an '85 Toy, 2wd... when I
sold it, it had ~130,000 miles on it. About the only thing *not*
broke was the tranny. [2]

Known computer USENET/game addict - that's me. It's one of my
better qualities, according to the boss types around here..

BTW, If you need the shop manual for that Twinstar, I've got it.
It's an addendum to the '79 Twinstar 185, as is the CM...

Don't worry Don you don't qualify as a "yankee". wish the deer here were
the size you get up there north of the cheese wall...although mom once shot
a spike buck (1' antlers barley legal) at 75yds with a black powder .50,
step dad thought it was hilarious because as mom got up to the buck she took
on look and said "OH SH!T, I JUST SHOT F*ING BAMBI!" dang thing still had
spots! thank whomever it was barley legal, like my wimmen!
