I'm visiting Australia in 10 days & would like to rent a motorcycle in
Melbourne. I only want one for a day, or 2 @ most, to ride the Great
Ocean Road to Port Fairy, round trip. Any suggestions on obtaining a
tour/sport tour rig? Thanx!

I was just in Melbourne last April - as well as some other cities.

Traffic is pretty heavy - and it's all on the wrong side of the road! Do
you have experience in driving on the left?

I rented a car a couple of times and drove around, but I'm not sure I'd want
to rent a bike for just a day or two. My reflexes are all wrong for
motorcycles on the "wrong side". . At least you're not likely to keep
embarrassing yourself by turning on the windshield wipers every time you try
to use the turn signals!

But if you do rent a motorcycle, good luck

The exact same thing happened to me in NZ. Plus I kept looking to the
right for the rear view mirror, which was now on my left.

But then I rent a car in Australia, and the wiper and turn signal were
back like the US.

It's pretty daunting. I had a pleasant and informative e-mail
conversation with Garners before I travelled there from the US, but
Melbourne was my first stop in Australia and I could not get used to
the left-side-of-the-road thing in the first week. I came close to
getting killed looking the wrong way stepping of the kerb enough times
that I decided not to risk a lapse of concentration on the bike.

Of course if you're used to traveling on the left side of the road,
this anecdote is worthless.

Good luck.

You'll find it varies. Australian-made and Japanese-made cars generally have
the wiper on the left, turn signal on the right. European-made cars are are
usually the opposite.
