Looking For Summer Site.

I am now in Wickenburg, AZ. I find this to be a good winter area. I
summered last year up around Alpine, AZ. AZ is fine, except I would
like to be streamside, and do some fishing this year.

I have heard that Southwestern Colorado may be what I am looking for.
I don't want to run the air conditioning. I want fishing to be very
close. Boondocking would be fine.

Will I have to travel further than Colorado to find what I want?
Suggestions are welcomed. Thanks

You might want to look into Priest Gulch Campground, north of Cortez. Has
fishing at the back of your rig.

It's a long way north of Colorado but northern Saskatchewan will
provide what you want. Daytime highs in the 70's - lows at night in
the 60's from the end of June to early Sept. I doubt you will find
any better fishing anywhere - walleye, perch, pike, brook, rainbow and
lake trout. Plus your yankee bux will buy 1-1/3 of our lame
canuck-bucks so it will seem like everything is on sale.

The natives speak a variant of English so you shouldn't have any
trouble fitting in and there aren't very many of us up here so you
won't have someone casting across your line.

Bob speaketh the truth. We visited him last summer at Prince Albert
National Park. Weather was great, Scenery was great and the people
wonderful. We had herds of Elk (50 - 100 at a time) that would pose
for you. The lake is large and serene. We were there for Canada Day
(July 1) and the folks took us in as honorary Canadians. We had
complete strangers walk up to us and give us a hug welcoming us to
their land.

One night, we were sitting in our coach when there came a knock at the
door. One of our neighbors was there with a plate of fresh caught
trout that had been cooked, ready to eat. From what he told us, what
we would call a large fish, they throw back to let it grow up.

It is well worth the trip up there. We are looking forward to going
back ASAP.

George

Having a minute or two that I can waste I will respond.

It depends how you define "trust". If you mean "expect perfect
impartiality and fair enforcement of all relevant law in all
circumstances" then the answer is "no". If you mean "expect human
beings who are in the main honest, impartial and knowledgeable about
the laws they enforce" then the answer is "yes".

The RCMP have their share of bad apples - they convicted a member of
the force about a year ago now for raping a native girl. That doesn't
make the force "corrupt" anymore than isolated incidents of bad
behaviour condemn any particular group of people. Living in a small
town puts us in much more personal contact with the police force - for
the most part the local cops are good people but there is the
occasional idiot or egoist who comes through the detachment. There is
no reason to conclude from that evidence that the force in general is
either good or bad.

Habitual stupidity and deliberate distortion of the truth from a
single individual though does merit the conclusion that some nameless
individuals are lying idiots. Form your own conclusions.

Wupperman Campground, Lake City, Colorado. Fish right there or on any
stream in any direction. Summer climate doesn't get any better.
9000+ feet at the Lake.

Southwest Colorado is a good choice, especially around Siliverton, lots of
cool , lots of streams.
Do a search for South Mineral Creek.

I Summer in Gunnison, Co. The Gunnison River flows right next to the Mesa
Campground. It's just 3 or 4 miles from the Blue Mesa lake. In late
Summer, gazillions of salmon are heading upstream to spawn.

cheers

We spent a few pleasant days at Shady Isle just north of Gunnison. It's on
an island in the Gunnison River. That was in '96 and there was an Italian
Rest. between the cg and road that had great food. Pleasant walk to eat,
then wander around the gravel bars in the river until ready to bed down.

We spend our summers in Lake City, CO, and love it. We stay at the Castle Lakes
Campground and Resort about 12 miles out of Lake City. It is on about 40 acres
with two lakes stocked with rainbows. It is at 9300 feet and we run our A/C
about three or four times during the summer. It is in the San Juan mountains
with lots of hiking trails and fishing streams. Call them at 970-944-2622 and
ask for a brochure. We found it about three years ago but there are people who
come there who have been regulars for more than 25 years.
