An unfortunate incident with my main PC has necessitated a fresh
Thunderbird installation.
*In theory* I could have imported a profile. The dead (killed by a power
cut) SSD had been backing files up but I remembered what a PITA it was
the last time I had a new box due to Thunderbird version mismatch. So I
chickened out and settled for recreating the various accounts, folders
and filters and importing my gmail address book(s).

Anyway, the failure prompted me in to acquiring a new box and this
refurbished Dell Optipex 7060SFF does at least run W11 (24H2) OK
including getting updates correctly.

As well as having some File History on an external HDD, a Puppy Linux
live CD enabled me to read the 2nd HDD of the dead box OK, so all is not
lost. An opportunity to clear out a lot of ancient clutter.

Now the new box is set up I may try one of the 'resuscitate a dead SSD
tricks'. The old box BIOS can see it, but it won't boot from it and
Linux can't see it.

BTW, getting shared printers set set up was a bit of a game,
particularly as one (USB printer/scanner) isn't officially supported for
W11. Google is your friend.

Not, as you may have noticed, I have had much to say on here of late,
but I can now continue to lurk with the possibility of posting if the
spirit moves me.

un pichet de bordeaux, s'il vous plaît

I use Xnews, it is not a registered app in my PC. All the files, including
score file etc, sit in a folder in dropbox and I just run the .exe from any
compatible device. No faffing if a laptop expires. Also sold my soul to
Google which gives seemless setup of any new device with gmail, apps etc.

that's sub optimal. I'm on semaglutide pills to manage glucose. They work
much better than metformin and don't have the gastro side effects.

not sure I would have the wherewithal to give up booze for a second time.
It took hepatitis E to motivate me last time in 2014. I think I would just
carry on now, as long as I could release a Stelvin screwcap,

I can comisserate- I just a couple of days ago bought a "Mini PC",
of the GMKTec G3 Plus variety[1], and in less than a couple of hours
of setting it up, I managed to screw up the preinstalled version of
Windows 11 to the point where I decided to wipe the disk and start
over... That was in retrospect, a huge mistake.

As it happens, none of the important peripheral devices worked with
the standard Windows 11 image, not the ethernet port, not the WiFi,
and not the bluetooth. They all required special drivers that were only
included in the disk image downloadable from the GMKTec website[2].
And to top it off, during the initial Windows setup, the unit would not
automatically restart when it was supposed to[3], nor would it display
anything on the monitor at that point. So I spent hours fiddling
with it to try to figure out when I needed to restart (no activity
lights unfortunately).

And, when it finally did make it to a point in the install where
the video kind of sorta worked, all I could see was the splash screen
logo, and three copies of what was supposed to be a full screen
image, across the top of the monitor, in fuzzy tiny font, with added
interference bars, etc. Somehow I managed to direct the mouse and
type in the command needed to bypass having a Microsoft account.

Luckily I had a USB->Ethernet dongle which made it possible to
get online and retrieve what I needed, but it was a huge faff.
I'm still not sure that the WiFi or Bluetooth are working worth
a crap, lots of people saying they've replaced the radio module
with something more mainstream.

Verdict: if you want the absolute cheapest little box for something
like HomeAssistant or installing Linux, it's not a bad way to go.
Now that I've got Windows happily installed it seems OK and fast
enough for what I need it for (running a Cricut Air Explore 2, and
driving a couple of Brother label printers).

[1.1] Only $125+tax on a flash sale, so a pretty nice price.
[2] 17GB (!), although they also had a zip file with just the drivers
but that needed to be installed through a batch file into a working
system.
[3] It wouldn't even power down, just sit there halted with power on.

Salut!

I shan't reciprocate as my alcohol intake has had to be severely
restricted of late. Liver OK, but kidneys slowly on the way out
apparently and I'm officially 'pre-diabetic'

I shall check it out. W11 also automatically set up Outlook as I had
been temporarily using that on my laptop. The Gmail web interface is not
too bad and sometimes is a last resort when trying to track down an
ancient message. Also took the opportunity to bulk delete literally
thousands of those, so no longer running up against free storage limits.

Not so many different IMAP accounts to keep tabs on these days now the
Gilera Network is effectively defunct. The occasional email to that just
gets forwarded.

I do like Thunderbird for the power of its filters though and the way it
handles attachments, but it's probably overkill for my needs now.

Some particularly vital files are also backed up on Wasabi cloud
storage, but I really ought to set up an automatic job for that (though
many of them will never change [1]) TBF.

[1] Note to self - some really ought to set those to 'immutable'.

Unsure what's killed my remote PC, I'll find out when I get back. My BiL proved
the box is working so maybe it is the SSD, my remote guidance to a non techy
didn't get much further. Give Betterbird a try, it is Thunderbird ESR but with
more fixes.

Good chance it will work on a Pi :-)

A change of diet can help with both of those.

For CKD, the trick is to control the intake of protein, sodium, potassium,
and phosphorus.

It’s *very hard* to control phosphorus intake, as a) it’s in nearly every
prepared food and many drinks, and b) it doesn’t have to be labelled.
