I always road Hondas in my yoof - and was perfectly happy with them.

Then I got a Suzuki and realised that Hondas were but the Ford of the
motorcycle world :-)

Still, half a billion motorcycles is quite an achievement!

I've owned all of the big 4 Japanese brands, my first was a Honda S65.
I have tried in the past to come up with a list of every bike I've
ever owned, it's around somewhere but I can't find it right ATM.

My take on it is that they are more similar than different, and there's
nothing wrong with having a brand preference, but to lump all Hondas
into a box, all Kawasakis into another, et cetera, is simply wrong.

They've all produced some great and some not-so-great models over
the years.

Ah, the dreaded VF750F, a mate had one, and the cams did indeed go
bad. IIRC Honda came up with a fix for him, and there were also a
number of DIY fixes for the Sabre and Magna models that were affected
as well[1]. Also IIRC the VFR750with its over-the-top geared cams
was Honda's response to show they really could build a bulletproof V4.

ISTR Honda also had a period where the cylinder heads for the GL1800
had a casting flaw that caused overheating? But generally, if they
screwed up, they would eventually make it right.

My own FJR had a couple of notable flaws, google for "FJR Altitude
Sickness" and "FJR ground spiders". Both issues were addressed on
my bike, the first with a replacement ECU, and the 2nd with a total
wiring loom replacement, which I declined in favor of reworking the
existing loom myself.

Mistakes happen to the best of them, it's how the manufacturer
addresses them that matters.

[1] Jack Hunt, formerly of rec.motorcycles, was an authority on all
things related to the Sab/Mag cam issues. He and his wife built a
motorcycle campground in Tellico Plains TN [2] which I have stayed at
a couple of times. Since sold on to other owners but it's still there
AFAIK.

Ummmm.

My '86 GL1200 Aspencade with leaking head gaskets was one of three
with the same issue owned by guys in my group at work. One of the
bikes was in the shop multiple times for leaking head gaskets.

Didn't stop the bike from running but I imagine it didn't do much
good for engine longevity.

Sure- just like the genuine Kawasakis built in Lincoln, Nebraska.

(One of which I owned, a 1998 ZG1000).

Here, have one of these: 'l'.

Exploding voltage regulators are hardly unique to Hondas.

I think I was put off Hondas by their advertising in the 70s, when, as
a teenager, I was just becoming interested in such things.

I understand that "You meet the nicest people on a Honda" was designed
to try and remove the "mods and rockers" stigma attached to
motorcycling, but, as a teenager, I certainly didn't *want* to meet
"the nicest people". And I sure as fuck didn't want to be one.

50 years later, my attitude to such things hasn't really changed

I'm a few years ahead of you and my memory was that I would have
killed to have _any_ motorcycle, regardless of brand or type.

I remember my grandparents' neighbors, a typical suburban couple,
not at all the 'biker' type, got their hands on 'a couple of Hondas'
as they were known in the late mid to late 60s. Not 'Honda 50s',
not 'Super Cubs', just 'Hondas' as a generic term understood to be a
lightweight bike totally distinct from a traditional motorcycle. My
estimation of their coolness shot up 1000% as a result and I could
only dream of my parents achieving such a status.

I managed to talk my dad into helping me to build a mini-bike from
angle iron and galvanized pipe (which was quite well constructed,
as dad was a former master aircraft mechanic for Northwest Airlines
and a Liberty Ship welder in WWII), powered by an 8 hp Rotax 2-stroke
liberated from a miniature snowmobile.

This was great fun, but I still longed for the real thing, which
eventually came to be in the form of a 1966 Honda S65.

Unfortunately, I have no pictures of either the doodle-bug or my S65,
but thanks for prompting my old man trip down memory lane...

These vintage Honda commercials from the 60s are pure gold.

I would have loved to see the high society fashion plate woman
negotiate Lombard Street on her Honda 50, but all we see is her
turning into it.

Gosh that stuff is dorky, I wonder what similar period ads for
other stuff was like.

I'm not sure how a bike ad could be better than the one for the
rocket 3, but I'd still never buy one.

When that bike came out I thought it was tremendous. But now I realize I like
the subsequent model more (the one Wik had).

No jet engines on the Stratocruiser. It was derived from the C97
Stratofreighter, which in turn was derived from the B-29.

Some variants of the C97 did have jet engines, but the 377
Stratocruiser never did, just the incredibly complex R-4360.

I was going to ask why a radial needed a huge radiator air intake
underneath, but hit Google instead. That one had jet engines as well.
