What winter birds have you seen?

So for this year we have had the following: White-crowned Sparrows (just this past week) Red-breasted Nuthatch (around the first of Sept) The latter (RBN) was a pleasant suprise. They are probably my all time favorite bird ;-) We never had any last year :-( I was really proud of having seen these at Seny in our UP here last month while on vacation. When I got back home and told my Mom, she told me that they had just started showing up at our feeder. This is the earliest we have noticed them here. They have become a regular visitor again now. Haven't seen any Junco's here yet though. Any one else seen them and how far south? Leon Fisk Grand Rapids MI Remove no.spam for email

I have Black-Capped Chickadees already, Tufted Titmice, Downy Woodpeckers, and the other day I had a Yellow-Shafted Flicker on my suet. ( Oh, and the Nuthatches have been around too.) No Juncos yet althought, it's been getting relatively cool here in N. Indiana so I decided to start putting out the suet to see if I'd get any takers. I usually don't see the above mentioned birds until late October early November. My hummers left early also. Last year I had one until November! I think we're in for a cold winter up here. I'm south-east of Ottawa, Ontario, and we've had plenty of juncos passing through for about the past week. Flocks of about 20 at a time are active at the forest edge where we live. I have had a Red-breasted Nuthatch in my yard for one week -- it is taking black oil sunflower seeds from the feeder and stashing them in a Norway Spruce! I guess the nuthatch plans on staying for the winter. I haven't seen any White-throated Sparrows yet, but I have heard reports of some in Manhattan. -- John J. I'm in the west north-west side of the Twin Cities and I just spotted my first RBN today feeding at my feeders, about two days ago I spotted my first White-throated Sparrow although I heard them a few days before that, they have that distinctive little peep noise that they make so I knew they were around. Again I have very mixed feeling about seeing the RBN's here because I'm going to be moving soon, it just figures that the first winter they show up in awhile is the winter that I'm moving!! Only saw white throated sparrow here. Waiting for juncos anxiously. Would love to have some RBN, but they don't always show up. Anyway, they are very unusual here in oak/hickory south Iowa. Steve

He'll be heading south soon, I suppose. The blue jays have solved my squirrel problems. They divebomb any squirrel so bold as to jump on the hanging feeder. I don't know who is more surprised when the squirrels are knocked off. Cheers Karen

We've got the white crowned sparrows, chickadees, female hairy woodpecker here in Centennial Wyoming. Judy, From what it sounds like, going by other peoples postings/locations, I'll bet there are/will be RBN's in your area. Keep a good eye out for them ;-) Once they've shown up at our feeders, they have always been around till next spring. Once again, this is the earliest we recall seeing them. Didn't have any last year :-( Leon Fisk Grand Rapids MI Remove no.spam for email ======================== On Sun, 3 Oct 1999 20:36:07 -0500, "Birdy60" <birdy60@globaleyes.net> wrote: >Only saw white throated sparrow here. Hi all! I live in a residential neighborhood in Toronto, and have been very pleased and surprised with the variety of birds that I've seen over the past summer. Yesterday, I had about 4 or 5 Juncos. First time since early spring. Along with them were some brown birds that looked something like sparrows. They seemed to be "hanging out" with the Juncos, They ate on the ground rather than on the feeders like all of the other millions of house sparrows. They had distinctive stripes on their head, a darker brown/black and a lighter beige-yellow color. I can't find an exact match in my bird guide - the closest I could come is either a white-crowned or sparrow or a dickissel. Can anyone help me out? Thanks, Melanie Leon Fisk wrote: > > So for this year we have had the following: > > White-crowned Sparrows (just this past week) > Red-breasted Nuthatch (around the first of Sept) > > The latter (RBN) was a pleasant suprise. Hi, thanks for the tip...I did see them again and noticed one had a white patch on its throat, so they must be White-Throated Sparrows. We've got the White-crowned Sparrows too. And I saw a pair of Red-naped Sapsuckers at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum. Geese are flying around occasionally as well. Not much else, winter bird wise. ----- Cody's law of birdwatching- There are two sides of a tree: the side facing you, and the side the bird is on. ~~Cody Burkett

We usually do a "What birds are now missing " list around these parts..;) However this past weekend I spotted a few White-Crowned Sparrows hopping out of the honeyhuckle hedge. I haven't seen them since May, and then only three days in May. I must be on their migratory path to and from the north. Sometimes I feel just like a McDonalds drive-thru along a highway..*sigh* Lynda On Sat, 02 Oct 1999 12:15:11 GMT, lfisk@no.spam.iserv.net (Leon Fisk) wrote: >So for this year we have had the following: > >White-crowned Sparrows (just this past week) >Red-breasted Nuthatch (around the first of Sept) > >The latter (RBN) was a pleasant suprise.
